Treatment Options for Heel Pain

Heel pain can be debilitating, making everyday activities like exercise, running errands, social events, and even walking feel impossible. The pain might be so severe that you worry about leaving your home in case the discomfort becomes too unbearable. If you worry about finding a place to sit wherever you go, it's time to address the issue before it gets worse.

Heel Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, which happens when there is inflammation of the connective tissue running from the base of the toes to the heel bone. Inward rolling of the foot or overpronation is often the culprit. Sometimes the pain resolves itself, but it takes weeks or months to subside.

Treatment Options to Resolve Your Pain

There are several treatment options available if you're suffering from heel pain. The best thing you can do is rest and avoid activities that exacerbate the pain. Strengthening and stretching exercises are often beneficial, and Dr. Timothy Gardner can give you a list of all the exercises you should perform daily to alleviate tightness and weakness in your foot muscles. Stretching on the wall, and stairs, and using a towel are also recommended.

Wear supportive footwear when you can, as shoes with thick-cushioned midsoles are helpful if you are walking or standing for an extended period. Custom orthotics can absorb shock while you're walking, especially on hard surfaces like a sidewalk, and are a great solution if you're dealing with chronic or recurring pain. Taping is also often beneficial in acute cases.

Sometimes, the only solution for plantar fasciitis is surgery. If you've exhausted all your options and still aren't feeling relief, then plantar fascia release surgery might be the answer. While it is a rare procedure and should be treated as a last resort, it will help your journey to living a pain-free life.
